Mission & Goals

The North Carolina Civic Education Consortium works with schools, governments, and community organizations to prepare North Carolina's young people to be active, responsible citizens.

Goals

  • Provide schools, governments (state and local), and community organizations with the most effective models, tools, and techniques for educating youth about how to engage in civic life.
  • Facilitate communication and collaboration among those who promote youth civic education and engagement.
  • Encourage young people to consider public service as a viable career option.

Results
The Consortium's impact map highlights the program's reach across the state. Specific results acheived include:

  • In summer 2007, over 250 8th and 10th grade teachers participated in Consortium professional development Participant evaluations included the following comments:

“Thank you for providing more ways to engage students in participating in becoming active, productive citizens. Thanks for the great plans and ideas. Every 8 th grade teacher should attend!”

“Valuable resources and simulations. I have already talked your group and website up. I will highly suggest your seminars to my colleagues.”

“Probably the most beneficial, professional, well-run, and fun workshop I ’ve attended.”

  • Innovative, collaborative civic education programs in 80 NC counties have received funding through the Consortium's Small Grants program, which is funded by the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation.
  • The NC Civic Index, the nation’s first-ever study of youth and adult civic engagement, was release in 2003 and has served as a model for other states seeking to assess civic engagement.
